Day 22: How I’m Attacking One Of The Main Problems Of A Tech Organisation
For the past weeks, I’ve embarked on a mission.
I’ve decided to attack one of the biggest problems I’ve seen in organisations. One that is more like a snowball than anything else. It starts small but before you know it it’s out of control.
And every area, lead and team are susceptible to it:
Never-ending discussions
How many times have you encountered a group of people, having a discussion that’s going in circles? Now imagine that discussion has been going on for years. Everyone complains about it but no one is doing anything to fix the problem.
So what am I doing? I’m tackling the problem head-on:
- Fostering an environment that drives discussions
- Ensure that documentation like decision logs are available
- Trying to get everyone to decide on a specific date
How can that change anything?
If you encounter a situation like this, don’t think that no one wants to reach a decision. Like so many other times, it’s a loop you need to help break.
Make sure you show up with a constructive non-judgemental mindset, and try to reset the loop. Remember that deep down, everyone wants to reach a decision and put it behind them.
No one likes to be stuck in a loop! ꩜
