Day 9: 1 Tip I Would Give To Brand New Engineering Managers
Have you just started your career as an Engineering Manager?
I’ve been leading teams for 10 years now. And what I can tell you (from my experience) is that for you to be successful you need to build a strong team culture, have a great reputation and consistently deliver results.
Yes, all of those come with time. But here’s 1 tip I would give you to start right now if you want to fast-track your path to becoming a great Engineering Leader:
Remember The Small Details
This seems like an easy ask, but it isn’t.
Truly listening, registering and remembering what you hear is a skill that needs to be trained.
And here’s why:
- Your team feels heard and the gap between you and them shrinks.
- Your peers feel you care about what they’re going through.
- Your customers know you care about their problems.
- Your manager knows you’re making them a priority.
If you want to check your level of relationship with others, see how many small details you remember about them:
- Where are they from? Do you know any words in their native language?
- How many children do they have? Do you know their names?
- How do they drink their coffee?
- Do you remember the last time they were euphoric or upset? Why was that?
This isn’t related to Engineering Management but to Leadership. And that’s where you need to start working ASAP.
More often than not, it’s the little details that matter the most!
