Day 8: 1 Trait All Successful Engineering Leaders Have In Common
Think about who you look up to. Think about who you consider successful.
If you pay attention, you’ll notice that most of these people have a lot in common:
- 📆 They are disciplined with their schedule
- 👬 They have mentors to turn to for advice
- 🎧 They zoom in and focus on one goal at a time
I’ve met a lot of Engineering Leaders, from people just starting to C-Levels, and noticed one particular trait that the most successful leaders share:
They truly care about their people
It doesn’t matter if you’re leading a team of 5 or a group of 50.
If you’re there just to get more power, a bigger salary, or a fancy title, I urge you to think again.
Truly caring about your people means you care about their:
- ❤️🩹 wellbeing
- 🪜 career development
- 🤩 happiness
And something that I know for sure, is that whatever you give, you get back 10 fold. You care for the team and the team cares for you. And before you know it, you create a sense of community.
So go have a conversation in the mirror and double down on the true reason you’re managing people.
This might seem like common sense but it will surprise you how much we hear that their previous leader didn’t care about them. Don’t join that statistic.
❓In your opinion how can you tell if your manager truly cares about you?
